Antique 17th - early 18th century Polish or Hungarian mace "Buzdygan- Buzogányok " with a massive bronze head formed of twelve shaped flanges surmounted at the top by a domed cup with a small bun-shaped pommel. The wooden shaft is wrapped with brass tape riveted with nails and encased at the top with a brass socket and brass handle at the bottom, pierced with a hole for the suspension cord.
These type maces were used as battle weapons and bared by a high-ranking officer and were a very conspicuous symbol of his position as the army commander.

1. A similar Polish Mace is published in the book "The Price Guide to Antique Edged Weapons" by Leslie Southwick. Page 255. No.805. Description: Polish brass mounted mace, 18th century. Rare.

Overall length: 50 cm (19.69 inches)
Height of the head including finial: 7 cm (2.76 inches)
Width of the head at the widest point: 7.2 cm (2.83 inches)
WEIGHT: 642 grams (1.41537 Pounds)
CONDITION: Showing age and usage, with old patina, split on the seam the brass handle, Age cracks in the wooden shaft.

PROVENANCE: This sword and other antique Polish arms and armor that I recently listed come from an old Canadian collection of Polish antiques and art.
