Description

Original, iconic 1916 French lithograph supporting
the Second National Defense Loan
, a bond drive held in October-November 1916, the third year of the war for France. The image shows a young, clean-shaven infantryman (known colloquially as a "bluet") exhorting his fellow soldiers and civilians on the home front to join him in moving forward to confront the enemy and win the war. The caption "on les aura!" (We'll Get Them") is one of the war's most famous phrases, originating from an April 1916 order of the day issued by General Philippe Pétain during the Battle of Verdun (fought from February to December 1916) during which the French held their positions on the Western Front at massive cost. Artist is Abel Faivre, by far the most famous French poster designer of the war. He contributed numerous other posters to the war effort, working in particular on commission for the Crédit Lyonnais, one of France's oldest banks, starting in 1917. This poster design was one of the war's most influential, often imitated by other nationalities during both the First and Second World Wars. Poster dimensions are 44 x 31 inches
. Newly linen backed (10 oz cotton canvas + 100 lb cotton paper) and acid-neutralized. Excellent condition. Poster lies perfectly flat; straight edges; strong colors; no fold lines.
