Description
I have done what limited research I could about this item and also consulted with someone who is quite knowledgeable in these types of items. The general consensus seems to be that this item probably dates back to The Battle of Verdun in 1916.The
Battle of Verdun
was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front in France. The battle was the longest of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse. The item looks like a French shell converted into a letter opener or knife most likely by one of the soldiers involved in the conflict. It has a very nice emblem of the Verdun crest attached to the shell case handle and VERDUN hand inscribed on the blade.
